Issue:
When the switch is pressed, the vacuum cleaner remains completely unresponsive.

Repair:
The issue was caused by one of the two paddle connectors having a broken leg. These small paddle connectors are located inside the cable reel and act as brushes on the two rails (visible in the photo) to transfer power to the device.
After sourcing the part (which took some time—I eventually found it at a service centre) and reassembling everything, the vacuum cleaner is now working again.
