A solid kitchen table is always useful… and building it yourself makes it even more rewarding! In this guide, we’ll show you how to make a simple but sturdy kitchen table — a practical and accessible DIY project. All you need is some good wood, basic tools, and a bit of patience to create a custom piece that fits perfectly in your home.

Introduction

Our friend ForuMauro has built a wooden kitchen table and had the patience to photograph the various steps of the process. This way, he can explain step-by-step the phases of construction to anyone who wants to take on this endeavour.

The Project Design

First and foremost, let’s start with the design for sizing the table:

Come ho realizzato le gambe del tavolo

I made the legs as follows: I went to a BRICO centre and bought a 5 cm x 5 cm wooden post, 3 metres tall. At these centres, they offer free wood-cutting services. I originally wanted the legs cut to 80 cm each, but since 80 x 4 = 320 cm, I had them cut to 74 cm each instead. That’s all there is to it.

Attaching the Table Legs

To attach the legs to the rest of the structure, I used aluminium brackets (also purchased from the BRICO store) with a thickness of 2 mm. I cut them to approximately 11 cm each, and the holes you see are used to secure the legs to the boards.

Painting

The wad in my hand is simply some toilet paper soaked in water and ammonia. This is rubbed on the wood before painting to ensure the wood’s pores open properly.

Installing the Reinforcements

In the end, instead of using a single board as reinforcement running the full length of the table (as shown in the initial design), I found it more stable to place two reinforcement boards along the narrow sides of the table, as shown in the photo.

Choosing the Tabletop

Once everything is completed, you just need to place the tabletop on. It can be made of marble or wood, or you can opt for prefabricated panels (the ones used for kitchen counters, for instance) made of wood-based material (likely chipboard) and coated with faux marble or faux granite. These are both attractive and durable options.
