Looking for a simple and stylish way to organise your spices in the kitchen? In this step-by-step guide, we show you how to build a wooden spice shelf that’s both practical and decorative. It’s a beginner-friendly DIY project that requires just a few basic tools and a bit of hands-on work. A great way to add a custom, personal touch to your kitchen while keeping everything tidy and within reach.
Introduction
Here I am again with another small project for my son. It was made entirely from two wooden slats (100x10x1 cm) of spruce purchased at the hardware store for a total cost of 3 euros. No special equipment is needed to create it—just a coping saw, sandpaper, plenty of elbow grease, and lots of passion.
In my case, having two routers and a jigsaw saved me some elbow grease. Now, let’s move on to describing the process!

Preparing the pieces
First, I sketched and cut out templates on a 4 mm plywood sheet using a jigsaw. This allowed me to shape the parts with greater precision..

So, after roughly cutting out the pieces, I refined them by placing the template on top and using a router with a bearing. The bearing, resting on the template, acted as a guide to shape the piece into its exact form.

Creating the joints
Using a Japanese saw, I made the joints for the edge band and the support strip. Then, with another router, I rounded the edges.

Assembly and finishing
To assemble the spice rack, all you need is a bit of glue. This is the final result—only the finishing touches are left.

And here is the spice rack, finished and already in use. It’s a practical and charming addition to the kitchen, ready to keep spices neatly organised and within easy reach.
