Need a handy place to hang your kitchen utensils without spending extra money? In this step-by-step tutorial, we’ll show you how to build a simple and functional wooden utensil holder — the perfect way to add a rustic, personal touch to your kitchen. With easy-to-find materials and just a few basic tools, you’ll have a practical and attractive solution in no time!

Introduction

My usual client (also known as my better half) .-) asked me to make a utensil holder to attach inside the under-sink cabinet. So, here’s how I managed to solve it using materials I already had at home, starting with a piece of hardwood—in this case, beech.

To make the ladle holder I used a piece of beech wood that I had

Creating the pieces

Using a hole saw, I cut a 50 mm wooden disc. However, the hole saw has a central drill bit that serves as a guide and stabilises the saw during the wood drilling process, which would result in a central hole in the wooden disc.

To create the disc without a hole, a drill press or, as in my case, a drill stand is required. Simply retract the hole saw's central bit so it doesn't penetrate the wood, and secure the wooden board in the stand's vice.
Additionally, it's advisable to place another piece of wood beneath the one being cut. This prevents the pressure from the cutting tool from pushing the piece downward.

Finishing the pieces

I attached sandpaper to the hole saw using double-sided tape. By spinning it on the drill, I used this setup to smooth the wooden disc as best as possible.

Then, using the saw, I split the wooden disc into two halves.

I cut the circle in half with the saw

Here you can see the recessed holes for the screws. Once again, given the curved drilling surface, attempting this operation without a drill press and a vice to secure the piece would be extremely challenging.

Assembly and painting

After drilling the 10 mm holes to accommodate the wooden dowel, the project is nearly complete. All that's left is to apply a coat of wood stain and a couple of finishing layers.

This is the final result of the painted utensil holder, installed inside the kitchen cabinet. It’s a practical and elegant solution for organising utensils while keeping them out of sight.
